"Look after your own"

Agree or disagree, Peter Hitchens who writes in the Mail is worth reading:

Idealism in foreign policy is a fiction. You should try to behave in a civilised fashion, seek to avoid war by timely strength and wise diplomacy, and - if war still comes - try to make sure it is swift and that you avoid the needless deaths of the innocent, not that this is very easy. War is by its nature ruthless. But if you want to create and maintain a good, fair, civilised society, then concentrate on looking after your own.

There is considerable truth to the idea that “if you want to create and maintain a good, fair, civilised society, then concentrate on looking after your own.”
