Good news? A new James Bond
The British Monarchy Media Centre reports,
The Queen, accompanied by The Duke of Edinburgh, will attend the Royal Film Performance of the latest James Bond film Casino Royale. The performance will take place at the Odeon Cinema in Leicester Square. Proceeds from the event go to the Cinema and Television Benevolent Fund of which Her Majesty is Patron.
After the Queen, James Bond may be the most identifiable Brit in the world, but this does not strike us as necessarily the best news. His treatment of women, in particular, seems slapdash. He did, however, have marital as well as martial thoughts, recorded in On Her Majesty's Secret Service by the inimitable Ian Fleming:
I'll never find another girl like this one. She's got everything I've ever looked for in a woman. . .She's adventurous, brave, resourceful. She's exciting, always. She seems to love me. She'd let me go on with my life. She's a lone girl, not cluttered up with friends, relations, belongings. Above all, she needs me. It'll be someone for me to look after. I'm fed up with all these untidy, casual affairs that leave me with a bad conscience. I wouldn't mind having children. I've got no social background into which she would or wouldn't fit. We're two of a pair, really. Why not make it for always?
