Two examples of fairness
We noted how important fairness is to civilisation in a recent post.
Today, when a “diabetes epidemic” is sweeping the western world, the discovery of therapeutic insulin was a life giver. Frederick Banting and Charles Best were working in Canada in the laboratories of John MacLeod when, with the indispensable help of James Collip, they managed to isolate the hormone insulin in a pure form that was effective in treating diabetes.
Only Banting and MacLeod received the Nobel Prize for the discovery, but Banting voluntarily shared his award with Best, and MacLeod shared his prize money with Collip.
