Nothing if not ingenious: Sniffer bees

The Daily Mail has reported that a small British company has trained honey bees to detect explosives. Inscentinel has so impressed America's Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency with trained bees in boxes linked to a video camera and computer programme that it is expected the invention will be operational in a year.

Inscentinel's Managing Director, Stephen James, was aware that bees have an exquisite sense of smell. He understood that a bee will stretch out and wave her proboscis when she smells something she likes. He did not expect it would take a mere ten minutes to train a bee to recognise explosives.
