From Everest to Buckingham Palace
Rhys Jones on the summit of Everest
While acclimating to Everest, Rhys Jones endured blizzards and low food supplies, and helped to rescue a climber who had fallen off a ladder as he tried to cross a crevasse. Jones, who lives in the New Forest, has wanted to climb Everest ever since he joined the Scouts when he was eleven. In May 2006, on his 20th birthday, he reached the peak, and simultaneously became the youngest person ever to climb the highest summit on each of the world's seven continents.
The Hampshire Chronicle reports that yesterday Jones attended a Christmas reception for the achievers of 2006 at Buckingham Palace. The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh were his hosts.
