Local democracy at work
The Southern Daily Echo reports that the Southampton City Council had plans for a site for “travelers” at Monks Brook, Swaythling. Most councils have plans like this, but local residents are frequently opposed because experience has shown that travellers who arrive in caravans are associated with increasing crime levels, litter and debris, and even falling house prices.
Four local residents convened a meeting, and invited the councillors to hear their concerns. Hundreds of residents attended, and three of the councillors have agreed to oppose the site. We will await details, to see if the decision holds.
