Playing football with the British taxpayer

The latest reports from the British sports world indicate that American and Canadian businessmen are going to buy the Liverpool Football Club. "English soccer has attracted a surge of foreign investors in recent years, drawn by the clubs' healthy financial prospects and the glamour of a league with a global audience." (Wall Street Journal) That is good news, I guess.

The good news for Liverpool is that the the Anglo-American investors are planning to build a new stadium. The ironical news for British taxpayers is that they have made this possible as the investors plan "to take advantage of grants available from the North West Development Agency". That Agency is funded by the EU which is funded by the British taxpayer to the tune of over £50 billion a year. Sweet to see we're getting a little of it back. Even sweeter for the businessmen.
