General De Gaulle once famously asked, "How can you govern a country which has 246 varieties of cheese?" The British Cheese Board says that Britain has over 700 varieties.

Much as I like most French cheese, especially if I'm on holiday, there is nothing more tasty than a good farmhouse cheddar. Henry II thought so, too. He bought 10,420 pounds of cheddar in 1170. Of course, he had quite a few Frenchmen to feed.
