Justice done

I was very pleased to learn that Colonel Jorge Mendonca, the CO of the Queen’s Lancashire Regiment, has been cleared by a court martial. Despite the fact that he had earlier been awarded a DSO in recognition of his fair treatment of Iraqis, Col Mendonca was charged with negligence for failing to insure that an Iraqi detainee in Basra was treated properly. There are suggestions that the charge against the Colonel was politically motivated. He has been cleared after a £20 million court martial, and we pray that the wounds left by this charge on him, his family and the Army will soon be healed. As the Telegraph says, “Our soldiers must not be treated as political toys.”
