London theatre's “exceptional year”

London theatre was so good in 2006 it was especially difficult to decide between the outstanding productions and superb actors nominated for Lawrence Olivier Awards. The Guardian has the details.

It's hard to overlook the fact that American Stephen Sondheim enjoyed a pretty clean sweep, but Sondheim was trained by Oscar Hammerstein II, the great producer of musicals, whose mother was Scottish. If you think we're stretching a bit (we are), keep in mind that Sondheim won with a London production and a London cast.
