French applaud Anglo-Saxon work ethic?

Writing in First Post, Janine di Giovanni suggests that many French voters will support Nicolas Sarkozy for President in the hope that he will “change the French mentality”.

“A doctor friend is voting for Sarko because she wants to see a change in France akin to the revolution Margaret Thatcher brought to Britain in the early 1980s. ‘Even if you hated Thatcher's principles, you had to admire what she did for Britain,’ she says. ‘There was no pride before she came. When she left, people had self-confidence that they could work and they would be rewarded for it.

“People are always looking for a hand-out,” says the author’s liberal husband. “They need a more Anglo-Saxon work ethic."

They need the government off their backs, too.
