A Matter of Life and Death

On a set “evoking heaven and earth, burning planes and hospital wards”, the Kneehigh theatrical ensemble opens A Matter of Life and Death at the National Theatre this Thursday. The Guardian writes that the story is based on the film of “a young British pilot who should have died with the rest of his crew after their Lancaster was hit returning from a raid in Germany” during World War II. Instead he finds himself facing a celestial jury with the radio operator he fell in love with before plunging toward the Channel. It sounds strangely wonderful.
