Remembering Alison Hargreaves

British adventurers include many women as well as men. Howard of On This Day reminded me that on the 13th of May Alison Hargreaves was the first woman to reach the summit of Everest unassisted without the aid of sherpas or bottled oxygen.

Her ultimate goal was to climb the three highest mountains in the world. In June she tackled K2, the world's second tallest and most dangerous mountain, joining members of New Zealand, US, and Canadian teams. On August 13, she was only 12 hours from the summit, but the fine weather was changing. Alison reached the peak at 6:45 pm, but was caught in a violent storm while trying to return, and died with all her companions. Her body has never been found.
