The May tree

"Whenever I smell a May tree, I think of going to bed by daylight." -William Morris recalling his childhood on the edge of Epping Forest.

I was walking in Portland when I saw these white and pink May trees. Whenever I smell one, I think of Britain. When they lose their blossoms they seem to vanish into the green of summer, reemerging in autumn with red haws and their thorns as fierce as ever.
