Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson

On Sunday Tanni crossed the line in her last competitive race. She was second in the 200m at the 2007 Paralympic World Cup, just 1/5 of a second behind Jessica Gali.

Tanni has 11 Paralympic gold medals for wheelchair racing. She holds thirty world records in total, and has won golds at the London Marathon six times. Tanni has become a media personality and a motivational speaker. She was born in Cardiff with spina bifida, but has not let this stop her. She resists being categorized as disabled and tells how five years ago when she was pregnant with her daughter, she was stopped in the street and asked, “How did you manage to get pregnant?” “I had sex with my husband,” she replied. Quite right. We applaud her 19-year racing career, and her fiery bloody-mindedness.
