Rio Tinto Zinc and British Petroleum are two very large British companies. Rio Tinto Zinc, which includes the Australian company Rio Tinto Ltd, has been in business for more than a hundred years extracting minerals from previously-worked mines. BP and Rio Tinto are now establishing a joint venture for projects that will generate electricity from coal with almost no CO2 or other pollutants escaping to the atmosphere. The CO2 will be sequestered in a depleted oil field in the North Sea. Injecting the CO2 will also allow extra oil to be produced from the field. A reopened colliery in Yorkshire will provide the coal. If things work out as planned, the companies look to advance synergistic energy supplies.
