CS Lewis and late-flowering love

William Nicholson’s Shadowlands captures

"the wonder of late-flowering love, and the terrible pain of mortality. The fact that it is based on the real-life relationship between CS Lewis, Oxford don, Christian apologist and author of the Narnia stories, and an American poet who began by writing him fan letters, only to fall victim to voracious cancer just as Lewis discovered his true feelings for her, makes it even more affecting.

But if this is essentially a love story between a deeply reticent Englishman in late middle age and a younger American who unfailingly speaks her mind, it is also a show that raises the greatest question ever to have troubled those who seek to believe in a God of Love."

Charles Dance and Janie Dee star in the production which has just opened at Wyndham's Theatre.
