Born in Fort Macleod, Alberta, Canada, to Bill Anderson and Myrtle Anderson (née McKee), a teacher and a Royal Canadian Air Force airman, Joni Mitchell grew up in Saskatoon. She performed her own music in folk clubs in Canada and the United States before being discovered in the 1960s. We doubt that anyone who loves her songs thinks of her as Canadian or British by descent. To see her is to see an artist who is poetic, mysterious, powerful, true. Her birthday was yesterday. Shine, her first album in nine years, was released this year.
