Bill Wilson in Antarctica
Cape Evans in winter by Bill Wilson
Edward 'Bill' Wilson was with Scott on the journey to the South Pole, which they reached on this day in 1912, and if he is remembered it is mainly for dying. But Wilson, my favorite of all the Antarctic explorers, was a keen scientist and artist. Cherry-Garrard's description of Bill's courage and generosity in The Worst Journey in the World is hard to beat. We wrote about him here.
