Ronald Harwood's creative struggle

Ronald Harwood describes how he wrote the Academy-award nominated screenplay for the Diving Bell and the Butterfly, the true story of Jean-Dominique Bauby’s life after a stroke leaves him “locked-down” and able to move only one eyelid.

Harwood is the author of The Dresser, After the Lions, and All the World’s a Stage, and writer of screenplays for The Pianist and Being Julia, among others. He is not easily intimidated, but he was almost immobilized by the challenge of turning the book into a screenplay.

His account of the miseries and exhilaration of the creative process evoked Jean-Do’s struggle with appalling circumstances and his triumphant victory.
