Innocence abroad

Stéphane Arpent writes us that he doubts that the EU is as terrible as depicted in our file - "I've just come back from a Public Inquiry held under UK legislation where one of the remaining options for citizens to safeguard their rights might be to look to European policy and legislation!" Unfortunately, they will be looking at corpus juris, completely undefended by presumption of innocence, a jury trial, or common law, century-old British safeguards of which Monsieur Arpent has no knowledge. Still, he is correct in one regard - the loss of those safeguards in Britain over the last ten years is so serious that an innocent like himself might well think that the British people need to search for help abroad. However, their help lies in themselves.
