Gifts of freedom
About the same time that Rowland Biffen develops new varieties of high yield, rust-free wheat, Frederick Hopkins discovers vitamins.
Catherine mentioned the gifts of freedom yesterday. One of those gifts is scientific discovery. Countries without freedom may be able to make some discoveries - the former Soviet Union comes to mind - but there is nothing like the spectacular inventiveness you find in a free country. The evidence, if you'll allow me to say so, is visible in the 800 years of the Science Timeline.
The inventors are worth studying. Their inventions are around us, making us comfortable, connecting us, transforming and sometimes saving us - but except for a few giants, we don't remember them. The Timeline describes the innovators and mavericks.
