Peers defend democracy; push for referendum on EU treaty
"A formidable list" of peers, including Lord Lawson, Lord Lamont, Lord Pearson, Lord Stoddart, and Lord Willoughby de Broke are "determined to make Labour honour its election manifesto commitment".
"Lord Lamont, who intends to speak in the debate, said: 'We will effectively turn the Salisbury Convention on its head. The convention is clear that the House of Lords cannot overturn a manifesto commitment. This will be the House of Lords attempting to enforce a manifesto commitment.'"
A commitment made and broken by the Labour Party whose leaders think the British people should have no say over their future. More than a thousand years of history say that they are wrong and that liberty will prevail.
