Marathon addendum

Cat seems to think you might be interested in what I've been doing the last two days. She gave you a hint in an earlier report. I can now assure you that I finished the Boston Marathon, though I was almost finished on Heartbreak Hill.

Cat pointed out the history of Athenian citizen soldiers who rushed to Marathon to defend their freedom against invasion by the Persian Empire. She did not mention it, but it is certainly true that Ancient Greece had a tremendous influence on British thinking.

Apropos the Athenians, I was interested to learn that nine US officers and soldiers marched in the Boston Marathon. They were wearing full combat fatigues, including combat boots, and carrying 45-pound packs. Lieutenant Gould told me that they completed the distance in 6 and a half hours. Runners carrying nothing and wearing the latest running shoes have taken longer.
