PD James denounces political correctness

PD James is best known for creating fictional detective Adam Dalgliesh. Her novels, including the futuristic Children Of God, have sold in the millions, and have been adapted for film and television.

A former governor of the BBC, she has had a seat in the House of Lords since early 1991. She has also been a London magistrate and a former senior civil servant in the criminal policy department of the Home Office.

Speaking the other day at the Palace of Westminster, PD James called political correctness "a pernicious, if risible authoritarian attempt at linguistic and social control".
"If in speaking to minorities we have to weigh every word in advance in case inadvertently we give offence, how can we be at ease with each other, how celebrate our common humanity, our shared anxieties and aspirations, both for ourselves and for those whom we love?"

She expanded this question into a soliloquy on fractured communities and policing that is worth reading.
