Royal Navy-led MCM task group clears the way for Iraqi maritime trade

Saddam Hussein's forces laid thousands of mines in the Persian Gulf in 1991 and 2003. Now, according to Jane's, "A mine countermeasures task group led by the Royal Navy and involving 22 naval vessels and 640 personnel from four countries is nearing the end of a seven-week operation to survey and declare safe all known mine danger areas (MDAs) off the coasts of Iraq and Kuwait. The 'historic ordnance disposal' mission is intended to encourage Iraqi maritime trade in the northern Persian Gulf."
