Books coming in from the cold
London's Faber and Faber will bring out-of-print books back into circulation by combining the new print technology of Print on Demand (POD), the ideas in Chris Anderson's Long Tail and an online community of writers and readers.
I like books made of paper - I can't quite imagine snuggling with a download on an electronic screen. (Are the electrons too energetic? Is the metal too cold or oddly hot?)
Like people, paper books have spines, are companionable and can be beautiful to see and hold. Unlike some characters, the book never intrudes or calls attention to itself, just carries me away.
Considering how simple they are, books are brilliantly organized. Technologies have come and gone. The book has outlasted most of them.
