Kayak gold

I was in a kayak recently. Wonderful, but I would never be called 'the flying doctor'.

Tim Brabants, the flying doctor, became lord of the Shunyi lake and claimed Britain's 18th gold medal – and first ever gold in canoeing – with an emphatic 1,000 metre K1 victory over his fiercest rivals. It was the complete race: he outsprinted and out-thought them at every turn, in the form of his life.

"I knew from the first two strokes," he said, his eyes blazing, the sweat coursing off his balding head and a smile so deep his face will hurt in the morning."

He goes for another gold on Saturday.
