"He has gone far along a difficult road"
A reader of this website, a person I've never met but one of a number who feels like a friend, wrote enquiring about a CS Lewis quote about pain. I remembered instead a quote from a novel - books are sometimes so wise! -
He has gone far along a difficult road who has come to the point of seeing that deprivation, pain and disability are of no consequence at all, beside the inward conviction of grace, and the secret peace of the soul. An acceptance which can only be made for a man's own self, never for any other. Another's grief is not to be tolerated, if there can be anything done to alleviate it. Ellis Peters, The Pilgrim of Hate
