In 1376 the Good Parliament closely scrutinized corrupt royal accounts and impeached the King's minister, the avaricious 4th Baron Latimer, on the grounds that he had stolen from the treasury.
Impeachment was a brilliant invention, a necessary tool for bringing the unaccountable to account.
Like the damsons mentioned below, impeachment was carried to America. It has not been used in Britain since 1806.
Now come reports that military kit worth £6.6 billion is missing. If reports of financial mismanagement at MOD and Treasury prove correct, impeachment's time will have come. The country needs a Good Parliament.
