Remembering them

f_poppy_girl_200w.jpg

They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old.

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning

We will remember them.

From The Fallen by Robert Laurence Binyon

Men and women gave their lives to fight tyranny in two world wars in the 20th century. They lived courageously and gave selflessly.

Once a war has ended, many wonder at the cost, the almost unimaginable human cost. Those who fought and survived sometimes find it difficult to recover joy when remembering lost friends. Those born afterwards can scarcely imagine the suffering of men, women and children - whole families, cities and countries enveloped and destroyed by brutal dictatorships.

In the relief of peace after war, we may forget that dictatorships are militaristic. We loathe war, and desire peace.

To enjoy peace, people must have freedom.

Freedom is not free.

We will remember them.
