Father-of-four killed in flood while helping others to safety
Pc Bill Barker was saving lives by directing people off a stone bridge over the swollen River Derwent when the bridge collapsed, and he was swept away. . .
Police and fire services, the RNLI and RAF staff worked throughout the night, using lifeboats and wading chest-deep in water to rescue residents trapped in their homes in Cockermouth, Workington and Keswick, Cumbria, which has been hard hit. Rain in the last 36 hours equalled five to six months of rainfall over London.
Bill Barker was loved by his wife, his children and friends. The people he served are deeply grateful to him.
Ave atque Vale.
Two other police officers and a father-of-three, Brendan Pickering, have been hailed for saving “many others” from dying in the bridge collapse in Cumbria that cost Pc Bill Barker his life.
