"On being told that Gordon Brown never bothered to speak to his bodyguards or learn their names, I remember wondering whether it was wise to be rude to those paid to take a bullet on one’s behalf. Lady Thatcher was happy to handbag her Cabinet colleagues but was solicitude itself to those on meagre salaries who keep the ship of state sailing in a myriad of small, unsung ways.
