A sad day in New Zealand

After suffering a huge earthquake in September, beautiful Christchurch on the South Island was savaged by a 6.3 earthquake in the middle of the day. The devastation is terrible. The death toll is already above 65. There are many unaccounted for in the historic town's heavily damaged buildings. Rescues are continuing.

The British High Commissioner, Vicki Treadell, said that the British Government was ready to offer any assistance to the people of Christchurch. British Nationals affected by the quake are asked to contact the Global Response Centre on 0044 20 7008 1500.
