"To end all wars"

William Anthony Hay reviews two new books about World War One. They focus on the war's dissenters. Hay notes that the horrors of the war generated desperate efforts by artists and by so-called reactionaries to end the slaughter of innocents and save civilisation from conflagration.

Entering a parish church in England - any parish church - I am always struck by the memorials to the dead of World War One. The numbers of young men from these small villages who died. . .there are so many of them. . .young men who used to sit and stand and smile where I am standing. . .once again the heart stand still.
