Professor David Bowen - the passing of a pioneer researcher into Alzheimer's

The number of persons diagnosed with Alzheimer's appears to be increasing, exacting a terrible toll from the persons, their families and their friends.

Professor David Bowen, who has died aged 70, was a pioneer in the study of the neurochemical basis of Alzheimer's disease; his work provided the conceptual framework that underpins current treatments for the disease.

He also understood that more than drugs would be necessary in helping those diagnosed with Alzheimer's.

David Bowen overcame a stammer and a heart condition to make real scientific contributions.
