Possibly because those of us who are old enough to retain some flavor of that time recall it as a period in our common history when it was a matter of pride, not shame, to be part of a world-wide political and economic system, framed by Anglo-Saxon ideas, and made substantial by citizens of all races and ethnicities. When did we begin to forget?
