Harbinger of the future?

An email from Jim Hodge:

David's post on the building of the facilities for the Olympics offers the possibility that the records set here will stand for a very long time.

The Olympics were triumphantly managed and also golden for the Brit Olympians. And the Commonwealth is edging past the EU in trade. Harbingers of the what is to come? Would it not be nice if the UK and the USA emerged in the near future with governments of, by and for the people and with a people to match.

Which reminds me of an old Readers Digest anecdote about the preparations for a political speech to be given in a large auditorium. The speaker was rehearsing and was quoting the Gettysburg Address: "...government OF the people, BY the people and FOR the people," when he was interrupted by the quiet voice of an old custodian cleaning up the stage behind him. He had been at the speech as a boy and still remembered the precise inflection of those words: "...government of the PEOPLE, by the PEOPLE and for the PEOPLE ..." Lincoln knew what the real subject was.

God bless us, every one!

Jim

We'd like to chip in with a public service announcement. The 'bright inheritance of English freedom' was something Americans cherished, and fought for. Brits might be interested in learning a bit more about their inheritance from an American point of view, while tea party supporters and anglophiles might be inspired by the Brits described in our book. The people of Britain defied a world of cruelty and superstition to create life-changing gifts. See their vision in Share the Inheritance. Hardcover, 140 pages, 125 colour illustrations.
