A sensible response to crime
When his remote rural home was broken into in the middle of the night by men in masks, the homeowner, Andy Ferrie, defended himself and his wife by using his shotgun, and wounded the burglars.
British legal tradition going back hundreds of years gives him the right to defend himself, but this right has been whittled away. The police helpfully incarcerated the Ferries for 40 hours when they arrived on the scene.
Yesterday Judge Michael Pert QC told the wounded burglars that if they broke into the home of a householder with a legally held shotgun they should expect to be shot. Judge Pert then sentenced each burglar to four years.
We leave it to you, dear reader, to identify the sensible and senseless responses to this crime.
