Sir Colin Davis - Ave atque Vale

Conductor Sir Colin Davis has died at the age of 85, the London Symphony Orchestra has announced. Sir Colin made his debut with the orchestra in 1959 and was its longest serving principal conductor.

Born poor in Surrey, his 'rich and fulfilling conducting career' moved from struggle to consolidation, crisis and an emphatic final victory in his triumphant, but never placid, Indian summer'.

When he was young, he was considered arrogant and harsh. In later years he was described as generous and inspiring. He was shaped by love and music.
