The Temeraire, JMW Turner
It’s pretty well known by now that Turner's Blue Rigi, the most expensive watercolor in the world at £5.8 million, was saved for Britain by a national fundraising campaign that included a schoolboy who emptied his piggy bank. Given that Turner gave a huge bequest of his paintings to Britain in 1851 in the hope they would be exhibited together (the government allowed them to be divided) he would be pleased that the British people thought so much of his work. The Blue Rigi is a beautiful watercolour of the mountain and lake, which he painted at evening, having painted the Red Rigi at sunrise.
Turner was a man who liked being out doors – in storms, in fog, at sea. When he heard that the houses of Parliament were burning, he rushed over to sketch them. Until the mid 20th century, most Brits spent acres of time outside. What did that do for them? Did it give them some secret mastery?
