Witness for the Defence

George Orwell
Howard of Beautiful Britain wrote us yesterday that "many of those who live in Britain constantly make disparaging remarks about the country." Orwell was not one of these, and he had some interesting ideas about those who did.
Why do I love a man who changed his first name to that of England's patron saint and changed his last name to that of the river he loved? The answer is clear as water, even though some of his ominous books frighten me.
