Druid surgeon
Travel fifty miles northeast of London to Colchester, and you will find Celtic, Roman, and medieval ruins. Graves are a particularly rich source of information. Recently the grave of a Druid priest was opened. Inside was one of the oldest sets of surgical instruments in Europe. It is now in the Colchester Museum, a mute witness to expertise we had not guessed existed so long ago – and to surgery conducted without benefit of anaesthetic.
