Second medical milestone in BMJ poll

The BMJ's second medical milestone in its online poll is "Antibiotics: The epitome of a wonder drug".

According to urban legend, a penicillium spore floated serendipitously through the open window of Alexander Fleming's lab and into history – except for one fact: The windows of Fleming's lab did not open. The penicillium spore's journey into medical history was far more serendipitous and extraordinary than that. We describe what happened here.
