Sir Edmund Hillary back in Antarctica
The Guardian’s print edition shows Sir Edmund Hillary, 87-years-old, sitting in the remains of Ernest Shackleton’s hut in Antarctica. Leading the New Zealand section, Hillary reached the South Pole as part of the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition l on 4 January 1958. He was the first man to stand at both poles as well as the summit of Everest.
The hut still contains clothes, furniture, food – Lyle’s Golden Syrup – and biological specimens from the South Pole's “heroic age”, which is described here.
