St. Olaf’s is said to be England's smallest church. Howard of Beautiful Britain says that the roof trusses may have come from Viking ships.

Close by St Olaf's lies Wast Water, three miles long and England’s deepest lake (258 feet deep). The Lake District is protected by reason of its designation as a national park, and welcomes millions of visitors – which may feel at times like a few too many. Still there are places like this that are filled with "a glorious wild solitude" (Dorothy Wordsworth).
