Close by St Olaf's lies Wast Water, three miles long and England’s deepest lake (258 feet deep). The Lake District is protected by reason of its designation as a national park, and welcomes millions of visitors – which may feel at times like a few too many. Still there are places like this that are filled with "a glorious wild solitude" (Dorothy Wordsworth).
