British ingenuity: our dentist would be pleased
In the current edition of This England we’re reminded of four more British inventions, one which we all use twice a day and another which has probably saved our lives:
William Addis invented the mass-produced toothbrush with proper bristles and a handle in 1780.Henry Sidgier invented the first washing machine, a rotating drum washer, in 1782.
Daniel Albone produced the first tractor in 1902.
Percy Shaw invented the reflective road markings known as Cats-eyes in 1934.
The Ingenious Timeline is chock full of inventions and innovative ideas, but they wouldn't exist except that Brits also created an exhilarating and growing free society.
