On Chesil Beach
Some reviewers have had problems with McEwan's just published (and 13th) book, a novella about a young man and woman on their marriage night at a hotel on Chesil Beach. To me the excerpt from the Guardian seemed shimmeringly written, erotically true, and suspenseful.
The idea that civilisation harms and protects lovers pushes like a wave through the text. I dread finding out what happens. I'd like to read more.
