British Museum alive and well

The British Museum's Great Court, designed by Foster+Partners
We wrote last year that on this day in 1759 the British Museum opened to the public. An eccentric entrance system meant that only ten selected persons could enter, leaving many cooling their heels at the door. That has changed. Admission is free, and the last two years have seen more than ten million visitors.
There is more about the curious and controversial history of this tremendous museum here.
