The contribution of reading to the liberation of slaves
Slavery was abolished throughout the British Empire on 1 August 1834. Abolition was due to the efforts of the British people and the slaves.
The role of reading and writing and British newspapers contributed hugely in inspiring the slaves to revolt. I wish children heard about it more.
The freed slaves celebrated with church services and parties, and buried their chains.
